The GIS team makes beautiful maps to visualize spatial data, many of which have been published in peer reviewed journals. To the left is a map of neighborhood walkability in New York City measured using our Neighborhood Walkability Index calculated at the Census block level. Our map of Neighborhood Physical Disorder in NYC was recently published in the Journal of Maps.
We have recently started making animations using JAVA and the MAPBOX and CartoDB web GIS tool kits. Recent work by Dan Sheehan using CartoDB to visualize homicides in NYC, month-by-month, from 2003 to 2011 can be viewed at (http://cdb.io/18NFPXW).
